2023-24 Leadership Series | Are Demographics Destiny?

Chicago's neighborhoods continue to see dynamic changes in racial and population makeup. Hispanic and Asian populations are growing in the region, while white and black populations are declining. The largest share of our in-migration, 23 percent, comes from outside the US. Data on income by race suggests our region has been unable to retain and attract lower-income or minority households. These and other demographic shifts have significant implications on our region's economy, quality of life and cost of living. Our guest speakers will help make sense of the data and trends and what it really means in shaping a more prosperous, inclusive and thriving region.
This virtual conversation will be moderated by José Rico (LGC Fellow since 2017), former Executive Director of Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Chicago. José will be joined by speakers Daniel Cooper (LGC Fellow since 2017), Senior Director of Research at Metropolitan Planning Council; Grace Pai (LGC Class of 2024), Executive Director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Chicago; and Eréndira Rendón (LGC Fellow since 2023), Vice-President of Immigrant Justice at The Resurrection Project.
In keeping with our tradition of unplugged conversations, sessions will not be available for anyone other than registrants. They will not be publicly broadcast and will not be replayed on public media channels. Sessions will be recorded for archival purposes and provided to registrants only, following each session.
